The growth of the lithium-ion battery market has prompted materials company Celanese Corp. to add a new line of GUR brand ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene to its plant in Bishop, Texas.
Demand for electric vehicles powered by lithium-ion batteries is expected to grow at a compound annual rate of more than 25 percent through 2025, Celanese said at a press conference Oct. 23. This trend will lead to increased demand for UHMW polyethylene separators for lithium-ion batteries.
“Customers rely on Celanese to deliver reliable GURs that meet very stringent quality standards,” Tom Kelly, senior vice president of structural materials, said in a press release. “The expansion of our facilities… will allow Celanese to continue to support a growing and diverse customer base.”
The new line is expected to add approximately 33 million pounds of GUR capacity by early 2022. With the completion of GUR’s capacity expansion at Celanese’s Nanjing plant in China in June 2019, the company remains the world’s only UHMW polyethylene manufacturer in Asia, North America and Europe, officials said.
Celanese is the world’s largest manufacturer of acetal resins, as well as other specialty plastics and chemicals. The company has 7,700 employees and generated $6.3 billion in sales in 2019.
